A Note About Grace Revealed by Greg Archer

I spent a good portion of my adult life reporting on Hollywood and interviewing celebrities. Movie premieres. The red carpet. Posh hotels. What fun. And let’s face it: There is nothing like connecting with a famous celebrity to make you feel jazzed about the work you do. Or so one would think.

After nearly a decade reporting on the stars, I began to feel empty inside. Something was missing—or so I thought.

Well, things would have remained just as they were if I had not done something that changed my life dramatically. I asked for a sign. More specifically, I had asked for a sign on what I should do about my Polish family—they had been on my mind for some time and I had felt a tug to explore their history with more depth. I was in yoga class when I asked for the sign—I know, I know … this is making me sound über Californian. Later that morning, when I walked into my office at work, I noticed a broken picture frame of my family resting on my desk, Wow, I thought … that was fast. I had just asked for a sign from the Powers that be and now, a photo of my Polish grandmother and her children, my mother among them, had somehow popped out of glass frame and was sitting there on the desk in front of me.

I didn’t really need to do the spiritual math here—I was being led to investigate my family’s past. And so, I did—after much hesitation.

I hesitated because something inside of me instinctually knew that I would be crossing a bridge that I could not turn back on. I knew that by really looking at my Polish family’s past that it would forever change me. I knew that by fully embracing and understanding how they, among 1 million other Polish people during the early 1940s, were deported to Siberia by Stalin, only to become refugees afterward, that there would be no escaping the transformation ahead.

But I had not counted on the whirlwind adventure ahead, one which found me venturing off to Poland. It was there, where my sojourn into ancestry, genealogy and history really began and there, I suppose, where I began to learn the deeper significance of my family’s history and a part of history that nearly got swept under the rug.

EXCERPT

How had my family served me by example?

As I slipped into the front seat of my very low-resting Mazda Miata, cursing the fact that despite nearly a decade of Bikram Yoga, middle age was beginning to have its way with my Polish hips, I thanked the Universe for the interview. And, seeing that I had arrived at such a dramatic turning point—bored; how could you be bored?—I naturally asked for a sign on what I needed to do.

The broken picture frames flashed before my eyes.

I had been given a sign months ago. How many more signs did I need to receive? The message was clear: “Look at your family; look at their past.”

What? Did I want a much more flashy sign? Something like, “Hey, you’re going to be on the receiving end of buckets of cash if you turn right instead of left at the next traffic light?”

Yes. Yes I did want that sign.

Still, when The Powers That Be instruct you to do something, you must do it. I had avoided doing what I was told and now I was weary, tired, listless and unhappy.

I turned the key in the ignition and sighed in frustration.

How the hell did I get here?
